Revisit the closure of the South Walkway Gate to the South Beach
The Commission received the request to revise the south walkway gate closure to the south beach. Since the closure, the Commission has witnessed improvements in beach security and positive feedback from the community. The Commission approved receiving this as information.
Request for Additional No Wake Signs closer to boat traffic and Dead Slow signs throughout the canals
The Commission received a request for an additional No-Wake sign to be located in Harbour Lagoon closer to boat traffic and Dead Slow signs to be installed throughout the canal. The Commission discussed the request and approved receiving the request as information. The public who observe boaters not complying with posted signage is able to report their concerns using the O.P.P. Report a Crime tool. This will ensure that O.P.P. is contacted directly with the information and can use the reporting as statistical data for officer placement.
Dredging Work
The Commission passed a motion to explore the liability and responsibility of municipal drains outletting into the Lagoon City canals.
Infrastructure Updates
- Aquatic weed harvesting with both harvesters is going well, with two bins (compared to almost one bin in 2022) being removed each day with the following canals completed: Cedar Lagoon, Gondola Lagoon and Windward Lagoon.
- The small Harvester (Scoop Dogg) has required some equipment repairs and will return to the canal when fixed. The large Harvester (Harvey the Harvester) has had some mechanical issues but is still operational.
- The annual weed spraying within the canals will be completed on Monday, July 17, 2023, other than Concord Pond. The two harvesters will remove the weeds in Concord Pond when the other canals are sprayed.
- The fountain at the entrance is not yet running as staff are still awaiting replacement equipment.
- Update: South Footbridge is closed. Once construction is completed, the pathways will be paved one month after construction is deemed complete. This will allow the area to settle prior to paving to avoid premature cracks.
- Staff have consulted with an arborist regarding the trees overhanging on the North footbridge and trail leading to the south beach. A report and recommendations will come to a future L.C.P.W.C. meeting.
