The Spring Mosquito Aerial Larviciding program has been in place for over 40 years and is conducted under a permit from the Ministry of the Environment that the Township of Ramara applies for each year.
At one time, ground fogging was done by the Township; however, the current method is more environmentally friendly. Council has also investigated different treatment methods and programs from time to time, but the current program is the most cost efficient for the benefits derived.
The Township uses a granular biological mosquito larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis. The larvicide is designed to specifically target mosquito larvae. The aerial spraying takes place in the spring before the larvae emerges as mosquitos. Application is only done once between April and May for the spring Aedes species. As there are over 50 mosquito species in Ontario, the Township of Ramara is not eradicating all mosquitoes. The larvicide product is also safe for humans, cattle, birds, fish, frogs, plants and other insects – it only targets mosquito larvae in the water.
The treatment areas only include wetland areas which are stipulated under a Ministry of Environment permit to perform a water extermination. No spraying is conducted over residential areas.
