Ramara has 3 fire halls, and can have a maximum of 24 firefighters on the roster per hall. Each new volunteer is put through an intense training program. Volunteers must pass National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) testing in Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Hazmat Awareness and Hazmat Operations to advance past their probationary period.
What do Volunteer Firefighters do?
Respond to Calls |
Volunteer Firefighters in Ramara respond to the following types of calls;
Firefighters carry a pager and may receive calls at any hour of the day. A firefighter then responds to their hall and responds in a firetruck to the incident. When the firetruck is rolling, other firefighters are responding to the scene in their own vehicles. Many firefighters have green flashing lights on their vehicles to show that they are responding to an emergency – please respect our firefighters and your fellow residents by pulling over when you see a green flashing light! |
Training |
Ramara Firefighters attend mandatory training each week at their assigned hall. Once a month, firefighters from each hall attend training together – this is called a triple practice. On top of regular training, Officers (Lieutenants, Captains, Training Officers District Chiefs and Chiefs) meet once a month. They practice their skills, discuss world-wide initiatives and ways to make Ramara Fire provide even better service to our residents. |
Hall Duty |
Small crews are assigned to hall duty on a rotating schedule. Crews attend their own fire hall once per week for a few hours to perform truck checks, ensuring each piece of equipment is in the correct spot, in good working order, and has the proper amount of inventory. Crews also clean the hall to keep it safe and orderly. |
Public Education & Fire Prevention |
Ramara Fire can be seen at many local events, promoting fire safety and tips on fire prevention. You will also see the crews at Ramara's elementary schools; teaching CPR/First Aid to all grade 8 students. The younger students learn how to create a Fire Escape Plan and put their plans to practice in the firehouse. |
